What are ecommerce transaction fees?
A platform transaction fee is an extra percentage your ecommerce platform charges on every sale — separate from, and on top of, what your payment processor (Stripe, PayPal, etc.) charges to move the money. It's easy to overlook because it's a small percentage, but on real sales volume it compounds into thousands of dollars a year that never touch your bank account.
This calculator isolates that platform fee so you can see its true annual cost, and compares it against a platform that charges 0%. Payment-processing fees (typically around 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction) are not included, because you pay those on essentially any platform.
How platform fees compare
- Shopify charges a transaction fee only if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments — 2.0% on Basic, 1.0% on Shopify, and 0.6% on Advanced. Using Shopify Payments waives that platform fee, but ties you to Shopify's own processor and its standard processing rates.
- BigCommerce does not charge a platform transaction fee on any plan, on any gateway.
- WooCommerce is self-hosted and charges no platform transaction fee — you pay your processor and your own hosting/maintenance instead.
- ShopsWired charges 0% platform transaction fees on every plan and lets you use your own processor — you pay only your processor's standard rate.
Fee figures reflect publicly published rates at the time of writing and can change — always confirm current pricing on each provider's site.
