What this tip calculator does

A tip calculator takes the awkward mental math out of the end of a meal. Enter your bill amount, choose how generous a tip you'd like to leave, and — if you're dining with friends — say how many people are sharing the bill. In return you instantly see three numbers: the tip amount, the total (bill plus tip), and each person's per-person share. Everything updates live as you type, and every calculation happens entirely inside your browser — nothing you enter is sent anywhere or stored.

How to use it

  • Bill amount — type the pre-tip total from your check or receipt.
  • Tip percentage — type any percentage, or tap one of the quick buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%). In the United States, a tip of 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for sit-down table service.
  • Number of people — enter how many people are splitting the check. If you leave it at one, the per-person line simply doesn't appear. The tool always assumes at least one person, so you'll never see a divide-by-zero error.

The result panel shows the tip, the grand total, and — when more than one person is splitting — what each person owes, including how much of that is their portion of the tip.

The formula

The arithmetic behind a tip calculator is refreshingly simple:

  • Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)
  • Total = Bill + Tip
  • Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Some people prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the post-tax total — either is acceptable, and the difference is usually small. Because you type in the bill figure yourself, you're free to use whichever base you prefer.

Worked example

Suppose your bill comes to $50.00, you'd like to leave an 18% tip, and there are 2 of you splitting the check evenly:

  • Tip = $50.00 × 0.18 = $9.00
  • Total = $50.00 + $9.00 = $59.00
  • Each person = $59.00 ÷ 2 = $29.50 (of which $4.50 is tip)

Bump the tip up to 20% and the tip becomes $10.00, the total $60.00, and each person's share $30.00 — a quick way to sanity-check what rounding to a "nice number" actually costs.

A note on tipping customs

Tipping norms vary widely around the world. In the U.S. and Canada, tipping 15–20% at restaurants is expected and forms a meaningful part of service workers' income. In much of Europe, a service charge is often already included and a small round-up is plenty. In parts of Asia, tipping can be uncommon or even discouraged. When in doubt, check the receipt for an existing "service charge" or "gratuity" line so you don't accidentally tip twice.
